Understanding GIFT Nifty

A comprehensive guide to India's premier global benchmark index.

What is GIFT Nifty?

GIFT Nifty (formerly known as SGX Nifty) is a US dollar-denominated futures contract based on the domestic Nifty 50 index. It is traded on the NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) located in the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), India's first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC). It allows international investors to take exposure to the Indian equity market without needing to register in the domestic market.

Why is it an important indicator?

Because GIFT Nifty trades for nearly 21 hours a day across multiple time zones, it captures global events, US and European market closures, and overnight geopolitical news. Indian markets open at 9:15 AM IST, but GIFT Nifty is already actively trading hours before that. By observing its price before the domestic market opens, traders can get a highly accurate pre-market indication of whether the Nifty 50 will open with a gap-up, gap-down, or flat.

Trading Sessions and Timings

GIFT Nifty operates in two major overlapping sessions to cater to global investors:

  • Main Session: 6:30 AM to 3:40 PM IST. This aligns with Asian markets and the entire duration of the Indian domestic market hours.
  • Extended Session: 4:35 PM to 2:45 AM IST (next day). This captures the European market hours and the entire US market trading session.

SGX Nifty to GIFT Nifty Transition

Historically, this derivative was traded on the Singapore Exchange (SGX) and was immensely popular among foreign institutional investors (FIIs). In a strategic move to bring liquidity and trading volumes back to India, the NSE and SGX formed a joint venture (NSE IX-SGX Connect), fully transitioning all SGX Nifty trading to the NSE IX in GIFT City on July 3, 2023.
